Child Brain Injury Trust

The Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) was established by a group of health professionals in 1991 to research and provide information regarding the effects of ‘traumatic’ injury on a child’s developing brain. CBIT are the leading charity (registered charity and company limited by guarantee) providing practical and emotional support services to families affected by childhood acquired brain injury across the UK. They operate in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and have a dedicated team of professional staff who provide support, information, learning opportunities and sign posting services to help meet the needs of these children and their families.

The charity’s Model of Integrated Support ensures that families are assessed early at the hospital stage and then followed up on a regular basis. The team work in all the paediatric trauma centres across the UK and also in the community and at school.

Sadly, there are at least 40,000 new cases of this kind every year and reaching these children early in their journey after sustaining an acquired brain injury is critical to enabling them and their families to get the help that is required to assist them in reaching their full potential.

CBIT supports thousands of families to access rehabilitation and legal services and to help them to understand how best to help their child. They create social opportunities so that families feel part of their communities and they provide schools with appropriate strategies and support to enable children and young people to achieve better educational and social outcomes.
